Maintenance Tips for Your Trailer
General Maintenance Tips for Your Trailer
Regular Inspection
- Check Tire Pressure: Ensure all tires, including the spare, are properly inflated.
Dexter recommends inspecting your tire pressure weekly and checking the condition of your tires every 3 months or 3,000 miles. Our Light Duty Service Manual provides a complete maintenance schedule and instructions for the recommended maintenance. - Inspect Tire Tread: Look for signs of uneven wear or damage.
Dexter provides a guide to diagnosing the most common tire wear patterns: center wear, edge wear, inside wear, toe wear, cupping, and flat spots. You will learn how to identify each pattern, diagnose issues, and determine how to fix the problem. Learn More. - Inspect Tire Sidewall: Check for date code to determine age, and check sidewall for crazing/cracks. The tire's age can be determined by locating the date code on the tire sidewall, and looking for a four-digit code – the first 2 characters are the week of the year, last 2 characters are the year in which the tire was manufactured.
- Brake System: Test and adjust brakes regularly. Look for worn pads and leaks.
- Lights and Wiring: Check all lights, including brake lights and turn signals. Ensure wiring is intact and connections are secure.
- Suspension: Inspect the suspension system for wear and tear.
Lubrication
- Wheel Bearings: Grease the wheel bearings at least once a year.
While attempting service checks, remember the importance of safety. Use the Dexter lubrication instructions if you are familiar with truck and trailer maintenance. If you do not feel confident performing truck or trailer maintenance, find a local dealer to avoid injury. - Hinges and Locks: Apply lubricant to hinges, locks, and moving parts to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
Cleaning and Protection
- Wash Regularly: Clean your trailer to remove dirt, salt, and grime. This prevents rust and corrosion.
- Rust Prevention: Apply a rust-proof coating to vulnerable areas.
- Cover Your Trailer: Use a high-quality cover to protect your trailer from the elements when not in use.
Hitch and Coupling
- Check the Hitch: Ensure the hitch is secure and free of cracks.
- Safety Chains: Inspect safety chains for wear and proper attachment.
- Coupling Mechanism: Test the coupling mechanism for smooth operation and secure fit.
