Boat Trailer

Start Your Boating Season with Confidence

Because safety starts before you hit the water

Warm weather is on the way and after months in storage, your boat may be ready—but your trailer might not be.

And when it comes to towing, the ability to stop matters just as much as the ability to go.

Winter downtime can quietly take a toll on your trailer’s braking system. What looks fine at a glance can fail when you need it most—often on that very first trip to the ramp.

The Hidden Risks of Off-Season Storage

Even when your trailer is parked, time and the elements keep working against it. Common issues we see each spring include:

  • Contaminated or degraded brake fluid that reduces stopping power
  • Weak or dead breakaway batteries that won’t engage in an emergency
  • Stuck or corroded calipers that limit braking performance
  • Low tire pressure that can increase stopping distance and risk sudden tire failure

Don’t Let Your First Trip Be Your First Test

Too many boaters discover trailer issues when it’s already too late—on the highway, at the ramp, or hauling a full load.

Getting on the water should be exciting—not stressful. Taking a few minutes to check your trailer before you tow helps ensure you’re ready for the road ahead.

Key Things to Check

  • Lights & Wiring
    • Make sure your marker lights, brake/turn signals, reverse lights, interior lights, harnesses, plugs & license plate lights are all working properly. If you need new lights, LEDs are best for marine trailers.
  • Breakaway System
    • Confirm your breakaway switch and cable are in good shape and the battery is fully charged. Repair or replace if needed.
  • Wheels & Tires
    • Inspect tire wear, inflation, lug-nut torque and any visible damage to the wheels or tires. Be sure to check the age of the tire, not just the tread.
  • Axles, Hubs & Suspension
    • Look for wear on axles, springs, brackets, shackle links, bearings, races, and seals. Check alignment and inspect for cracks or scoring in hubs/hub drums.
